The Falls of Clyde - the Iron Hull

The bulb iron/brass is made by silver soldering a brass wire to the side edge of a brass flat (plate), then moving this to the centre of the edge with the aid of a pair of matched rollers. Before the knees are formed the ends are annealed, then a small portion removed. After forming, a patch is silver soldered in place to form the beam ends. The forming machine has a cam and double leaver action. The part for forming the knees, consist of two clamps, one clamping the beam to the base of the machine, while the other is mounted with a table on a pivot.  This when clamped to the end of the beam, is turned to an adjustable stop to form the knee. This is repeated for each end of the beam.
